The announcement was made by Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque at a media briefing at the police headquarters on Saturday.

“Bangladesh’s counterterrorism efforts were praised at a recent Interpol meeting,” he said at the briefing organised to announce Police Week starting Jan 8.

“The secretary of Interpol asked us to recommend two counterterror officials who would be able to train law enforcers from other countries. We have sent the names of two officers.”

Though Bangladeshi law enforcers have previously gone for Interpol training, this is the first time Bangladeshi police have received permanent positions as Interpol specialists, the IGP said.

The names of the two officers were not disclosed for security reasons.

Bangladesh came into the spotlight after the Gulshan attack on Jul 1, 2016 that left 22 people dead, including 17 foreigners.

A total of 35 terror raids were conducted in 2017. The raids led to the deaths of 57 members of militant ‘suicide squads’ and the arrest of over 100 suspects.

“The security situation is much better than before,” Hoque said. “The rising militant threat has been neutralised and its network crippled.”
