Mexico’s government has told drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman he will be handed over to American authorities to face prosecution, beginning the long road to extradition.
The captured fugitive who entertained actor Sean Penn while on-the-lam has had two separate arrest warrants filed against him in California and Texas.
Those warrants, which include charges of organized crime, embezzlement, association with murder are in addition to indictments in Illinois, New York, Florida and New Hampshire.
MEXICAN ACTRESS’ EL CHAPO CONNECTION SET UP SEAN PENN MEETING
The decision follows months of resistance among Mexican officials to extradite its notorious Sinaloa cartel boss after the U.S. government began filing extradition requests in June. Guzman’s warrants were served by Interpol agents at the maximum security prison where he is being held, according to Mexico’s Attorney General.
His flight from capture ended Friday, six months after he tunneled out of a Mexican prison.
Officials have cautioned that the extradition process may take months. Guzman’s attorney Juan Pablo Badillo has said that the defense already has filed six motions to challenge extradition requests.
